Aang is ready to continue his fight for peace and balance in the world, as Netflix has officially green-lit the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender for not only season 2 but also season 3.
According to Netflix, the show got 41.1 million views in 11 days, which is a truly impressive result that guaranteed series renewal. The original anime, which the Netflix show is based on, has three seasons. Thus, the live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender was expected to be an extensive project. However, Netflix is known for cancelling series that didn’t meet expectations in viewership, so the future of Avatar wasn’t sure.
It seems now that teenagers Aang, Katara and Sokka will again set out on a dangerous quest. Surely, the heroes will be accompanied by the furry flying bison, Appa, and the winged lemur, Momo.
We’re gathering all news, rumours and predictions about the second season of a live-action version of the famous anime.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 release date
For now, Netflix hasn’t provided any information on the release date of Avatar seasons 2 and 3.
The first season took around two years to develop, but that was against the backdrop of the Hollywood strikes. Assuming work on the scripts has already begun, we could see Avatar return as soon as the second half of 2025.
As soon as Netflix releases more information, we’ll update this article.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 plot
Spoilers for Avatar: The Last Airbender below.
The Netflix series derives from Avatar: The Last Airbender (also known as Avatar: The Legend of Aang), which is widely considered one of the best animated series of all time.
In the fantasy world inspired by Asian culture, characters can control and manipulate one of the four elements – water, earth, fire, or air – by ‘bending’ them telekinetically. However, only the Avatar can master all four.
The first season of life-action Avatar covers the events from Book One: Water, anime season 1. Siblings Katara and Sokka found Avatar Aang and set off with him to the Northern Water Tribe. However, they were followed by envoys of the Fire Nation, including the exiled Prince Zuko and the cynical Admiral Zhao.
In the season finale, the Water Tribe clashed with the Fire Nation’s fleet at the North Pole. Although Aang and the water benders managed to repel the attack, the Tribe suffered heavy losses.

The creators included a preview of the new season in the mid-credit scenes. In his city, Fire Lord Ozai learns that a Sozin’s Comet will soon appear in the sky, from which the fire benders can draw power to enhance their skills. Ozai plans to use this moment to destroy the Avatar and conquer the world. It also turns out that during the battle at the North Pole, the Azula-led army captured the capital of the Earth Kingdom.
Viewers have to prepare for a time jump between seasons 1 and 2. The reason is that the child actors playing in the series are growing up, and the series creators want to explain the changes in their appearance.
As showrunner Albert Kim explained:
We definitely thought about that going into season 1 so that we can accommodate for puberty, adolescence, time passing — all of those fun things that happen to real-life human beings that don’t happen to animated characters.
In the second season, Aang will try to learn how to control water, earth, and fire. The heroes will also face more clashes with the Fire Nation, strengthened this time by the comet’s power.
We should see the introduction of earth bender Toph, a young blind girl who becomes a permanent fixture in the group. Plus, the group may also visit Ba Sing Se. This is the Earth kingdom capital, which places its citizens into ‘rings’ based on their class.
The rulers attempt to maintain a sense of peace in the city, sometimes to the point of denying any outside threats. This is something that proves incredibly dangerous to Aang and the group in the anime.

Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 crew
Initially, the creators of the original animation, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, were involved in the series’ development. They were supposed to work as producers and showrunners. However, they left the project in 2020.
In an open letter to Avatar fans, DiMartino explained his decision as follows:
I realized I couldn’t control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded. So, I chose to leave the project. It was the hardest professional decision I’ve ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity.
In an Instagram post, Konietzko added:
Though I got to work with some great individuals, both on Netflix’s side and on our own small development team, the general handling of the project created what I felt was a negative and unsupportive environment.
Netflix
In 2021, Netflix announced the new team for the Avatar: The Last Airbender. Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow) serves as the showrunner, executive producer, and screenwriter. Dan Lin (The Lego Movie), Roseanne Liang (Creamerie), Lindsey Liberatore (Walker), and Michael Goi (American Horror Story) are co-executive producers for the show.
Initially, the music for the series was to be created by Jemery Zuckerman, who developed the soundtrack for the original animation. However, the composer left the project with DiMartino and Konietzko. Finally, the score for the series is by Takeshi Furukawa.
