Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undeniably witnessed a meteoric rise in recent years, revolutionising industries, transforming economies, and reshaping the way we live and work. Emergn has found that an overwhelming 94% of new digital products and services will be at least partly AI developed by 2028.

As we stand on the cusp of an AI-driven future, the prospects seem boundless, with promises of increased efficiency, innovation, and improved quality of life. However, this rapid ascent comes with a set of challenges and risks that demand careful consideration. The European Union’s recent move to regulate AI through the EU AI Act reflects the growing awareness of the need to balance innovation with ethical and societal concerns.

AI risks and rewards

The benefits of AI are vast and varied. From enhancing productivity and automating mundane tasks to driving breakthroughs in healthcare, AI’s positive impact is undeniable. In healthcare, AI is aiding in early disease detection, drug discovery, and personalised treatment plans. In finance, AI algorithms are optimising investment portfolios and detecting fraudulent activities

Additionally, AI is fostering breakthroughs in fields such as climate science, transportation, and education, offering solutions to complex problems that were once impossible.

However, the rapid integration of AI into various aspects of our lives has raised concerns and challenges that cannot be ignored. 

One of the primary challenges is the potential for job displacement due to automation. As AI systems become more adept at handling routine tasks, there is a risk of job loss for certain industries and roles. This necessitates a proactive approach to reskilling the workforce to adapt to the evolving job landscape. 

With the increasing integration of AI, it is imperative to exercise thoughtful consideration to guarantee its responsible deployment. This emphasises the importance for businesses and governments to understand and embrace its optimal utilisation rather than merely following trends.

Implementing best AI practices

There is a clear lack of humane experience with AI. This is what is putting successful implementation at risk. To harness the full potential promised by AI, organisations need access to experts to help them close the gap between executive expectations and implementation realities. 

Offering expert thinking and knowledge of best practice, such organisations can help in the development of programmes that foster continuous learning, ensuring new practices not only align with technology but also challenge and refresh legacy thinking. 

But, as with all new technologies, bringing in those with knowledge to implement its usage and not teaching colleagues the right methods and systems at the same time will only result in an unsuccessful in the medium-to-long term. For best results, any transformation needs to be owned by the organisation undertaking it.

AI is an investment. But a critical, essential part of this investment is not technological. It is advisory, and educational. Organisations must deeply understand their customers’ concerns and establish robust structures to oversee AI, particularly the data it’s trained on, ensuring its development is both ethical and effective. In essence, the true value of AI lies in the wisdom of its application. 

The ethics of AI implementation

Ethical concerns are another significant challenge. AI systems, if not developed and deployed responsibly, can perpetuate bias, discrimination, and privacy breaches. The UK AI Summit last month was a powerful next step, but now it is time to follow up with an action plan, especially with the EU AI legislation coming into effect in 2025. The Act serves as a landmark effort to strike a balance between fostering innovation and safeguarding societal values. 

As the global community continues to grapple with the implications of AI, collaborative efforts between governments, industry, and academia are essential to harness the potential of AI responsibly and ethically. 

Unlocking AI’s potential while protecting privacy

Alongside all of this, Emergn’s survey also showed that 71% of respondents agreed data privacy is critical in the era of increased digitalisation. As data collection continues to expand, it is crucial to establish protective measures for aggregating sensitive information and ensuring full transparency. 

The prohibition of specific applications under the Act is welcomed, such as AI systems employed for workplace emotion recognition and the untargeted extraction of facial images from the internet, or CCTV footage for the creation of facial recognition databases.

The EU AI Act aims to enhance oversight of AI systems created and implemented within the EU. Those heavily dependent on AI, such as investors, developers, and businesses dealing with potentially high-risk AI systems, stand to gain from proactively conforming to regulations during the initial phases of AI system development. This approach also seeks to increase confidence in their systems.

Ultimately, only through thoughtful regulation and conscientious development and implementation can we truly unlock the full potential of AI.
