Kaiju fans, rejoice. Godzilla and Kong are back, but this time the two giants aren’t going head-to-head. They’ll have to put aside their differences and team up against a new threat in The Hollow Earth.
Previous films in the MonsterVerse series such as Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters have had post-credits teasers to give fans an idea of what they’ll be seeing next. But does Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire follow this trend?
We’ve seen an early screening of the film and can confirm now. If you want to get your tickets you can do so from Cineworld, Odeon and Vue in the UK, and AMC and Fandango in the US.
Does Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire have a post-credits scene?
Sadly, there’s no post-credits scene at the end of Godzilla x Kong. However, we do hear the roar of a Titan that had an unexpected appearance in the film, which could indicate where the franchise will go next – if they do another movie, that is.
Which Titan roared at the end of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire?
Spoilers for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire below
After hearing the roar, we believe that it belongs to the Queen of the Monsters herself, Mothra. This is further corroborated by comicbookmovie, who also believe that they heard the peaceful giant.
Why is Mothra in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire?
The original Mothra met her demise in the Godzilla sequel against the fearsome three-headed dragon, King Ghidorah. However, a new version (Mothra 2.0, if you will) was awoken from her stasis by Jia, who was discovered to be the girl in the Iwi prophecy that would save the tribe in The Hollow Earth from the Skar King and his army.
Mothra helped Godzilla see reason when he tried to attack King Kong in a hilariously ridiculous fight by the pyramids in Cairo. The great ape needed the lizard’s help to defeat a new threat, but Godzilla did not listen to Kong’s pleas for peace. He only calmed down when Mothra showed up, and seemingly communicated the message.
She also protected the humans during the battle by flinging away enemies and debris, and ultimately played a huge part in the survival of the remaining Iwi tribe.
The return of Mothra could also mean that she will be the focus of another MonsterVerse movie. That also aligns with another post-credits teaser that happened in an earlier film in the series.
Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) managed to get his hands on one of the heads of Ghidorah. This mind ended up being used for Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong. However, as Screen Rant points out, we never saw the destruction of the head. It may still exist.
Mothra was killed by Ghidorah in King of the Monsters, but in the process her powers were transferred to Godzilla via her ashes, stopping him from suffering from a nuclear meltdown and ultimately making him successful in defeating the dragon.
The 1996 Japanese film Rebirth of Mothra demonstrates the Titan laying an egg to preserve the species, and as such she is effectively immortal. The most recent hatch was triggered by Jia in Godzilla x Kong.
If another film were to focus on Mothra, it would make narrative sense to bring back Ghidorah in some form or another so she can get her revenge. Many suspect that the dragon could return as Mecha-King Ghidorah, who has not appeared in the MonsterVerse yet.
So, only one question remains…
Will there be another MonsterVerse film?
At the time of writing, there is no confirmation for another film after Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
That said, director Adam Wingard gave the following quote to DiscussingFilm:
The whole idea that if you’ve done two movies, like, maybe you should just go ahead and do a third because, as you said, there’s a trilogy in there. I definitely think there’s more story to this, and I think that I have more story to tell. But it just depends on how [Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire] does and how things kind of shape out. I know that sounds like a bullshit diplomatic answer (laughs). But the truth is, If I’m going to be completely honest with you, I do have more story to tell with these monsters and I know where I’d go with it.
No names were mentioned in that quote, but we believe Mothra could play a big part in the next film. And of course, we could also see the return of Godzilla, Kong and Shimo, after she was liberated from the Skar King.
We’ll likely hear more in the coming months about whether Godzilla x Kong will get a sequel, as it rolls out in cinemas across the globe. Find out when we expect the film to get a home release here.
